On Tuesday, 6th September 2022, WJ joined more than 800 clients, contractors, designers, and geotechnical experts in Central London for the annual Ground Engineering Awards.

About the Ground Engineering Awards?

First established more than a decade ago, the Ground Engineering Awards have become a benchmark for excellence within the construction and geotechnical community. Each year, the event celebrates not just technical achievement, but also the ability of companies to innovate, collaborate, and deliver lasting value to clients and communities.

The Ground Engineering Awards are recognised as one of the most prestigious events in the geotechnical calendar. They bring together leading specialists from across the UK and beyond, shining a spotlight on the projects and people driving the industry forward.

For many, the Ground Engineering Awards mark the culmination of a year of hard work, and a celebration of the achievements of companies and individuals working within the industry. There is a wide range of categories such as awards for innovation, excellence, and community engagement, as well as individual rising star awards.

WJ at the 2022 Ground Engineering Awards

In 2022, WJ was competing for the illustrious title of ‘Contractor of the Year’, which recognises the achievements of geotechnical contractors or specialist geotechnical divisions within general contracting firms that can demonstrate achievement of clear business milestones over the last year and a half. The award celebrates firms that have continually delivered innovation, quality, and value between January 2021 and March 2022, while growing in terms of revenue, profits, and staff numbers.

For our Contractor of the Year submission, we highlighted key projects that showcased innovation in dewatering, commitment to sustainability, and the collaborative spirit of our teams. Our entry focused on delivering practical solutions to complex ground conditions while ensuring projects were completed on time and within budget.

Highly Commended for Contractor of the Year

Unfortunately, on this occasion, WJ was up against very stiff competition. On the night, the award was won by Bachy Soletanche. We were, however, highly commended, with judges noting that we offered a great presentation that was full of energy and responded strongly to the criteria.

Beyond the award itself, the evening provided our staff with a unique opportunity to reconnect with peers, exchange knowledge, and celebrate the incredible diversity of talent across the sector. Guests were able to share insights on innovative project delivery, sustainability initiatives, and emerging techniques shaping the future of geotechnical engineering. Seeing the breadth of expertise on display and exchanging ideas with fellow professionals reinforced the value of collaboration, creativity, and high standards in every project we undertake.

Looking ahead

Whilst it is always disappointing to come home without a win, everyone who attended from WJ had a wonderful evening and were very proud of our commendation. WJ continues to be thankful for all the hard work our staff have put in over the last 12 months.

Being highly commended has motivated us to continue pushing boundaries in geotechnical engineering. As we look ahead to the next 12 months, WJ remains focused on innovation, safety, and delivering value to our clients. We are already preparing for new projects that will set even higher standards for the future.
